Stoked Skate Jam- Sunday 21st September 2003 @ Dimensions, Burslem, S-O-T. |
|
Due to circumstances, we were forced to change our venue,
for the Stoked jams, from Fenton Manor to Dimensions in Burslem. This
jam was the first to be held there.
We new from the start that this venue was not going to be as roomy as the luxury of Fenton Manor but beggars can’t be choosers and we set about to make it a good one. On reflection, our thoughts were correct but I felt it made the jam a lot more intense and hectic!! I’m sure you all have your views on this but when it all boils down to it- there’s no other place in the UK that has regular, weather proof skate jams all year round! When the winter is here- man these are going to well handy! Also- I’m glad we decided to make it an all skateboard jam- there was definitely no room for the binliners! |

The masses poured in at 1pm and the carnage commenced. The new block saw some early wreckage (hope you all like it- another result of your jam contributions!) as did the driveways etc! We decided to have a bit of a different format this jam and instead of doing a ‘best trick’ competition we did a ‘ripper of the day’ comp. Basically, the skater who ripped up shit all day and tried (and succeeded) tricks above and beyond the call of duty-won! A brand new ‘Krooked’ deck for grabs! This was such a hard one to call and it relied on the judgement of a few expert judges to finally decide that ‘lil’ Kev deserved the prize. Not because he was necessarily the best on the day- that would be impossible to decide. It was because he tried everything and landed loads and generally pushed his skating to the max! For a 14 year old he’s got very large testicles!!!! His masterpiece was kickflip to frontside board on the driveway rail!! Amongst many, on the day, he also landed a boardslide on the green barrier from off the driveway- that takes some gnarly balls!! Well done to Kev- keep it up mate. |

Also, in the running for this prize was, of course, Chalky and Phil who ripped the place up as usual- starting with the new block, they set the standard and moving on to the rail/driveway they continued to rip. Also, Norris who was very close- switch 180 to 5-0, nollie 50:50 and nollie lips all on the d’way rail! Apart from the usual proceedings, we had a couple of extra features to this jam. Firstly, we got the Extreme Channel’s ‘Legends Of The Extreme’ roadshow turn up. They parked their truck (with loads of TV’s on the back playing skate footage and blasting out sounds) in the car park and gave out stickers, tees and stencilled kids decks all afternoon. The two guys from Extreme were well impressed with our jams and thought it was a great thing we had going! Also, we had a visit from Jon from a project called UKVM. This is going to be a video magazine dedicated to the UK’s skate scene. He was also well impressed with our jam/scene and got stuck into filming some footage for the vid. Hopefully he got some good stuff for the first edition that should be out around November time! Be sure you check it- you might see yourself! We also did a separate raffle, to raise funds for the skatepark project. A Death deck signed by Lee Blackwell and Dan Cates was up for grabs. Well done to the young ‘un who won it (that will be a dilemma- whether to skate it or hang it on his wall!) and thanks to all who contributed. We raised about £70!! That’ll buy us a floodlight!! So, thanks to Beaker, Gee, Lisa and Si who made the sound all day, all the lads who helped set up/take down the kit, Drew at Dazed for the Death deck/raffle prize, to Marco from New Deal/Zoo York for other raffle prizes, to Extreme Channel for supporting us, to Nick at Eastpak for their support and some goodies, to Doofy clothing, to Jon at UKVM for travelling to check us out, to the staff at Dimensions and to those of you who turned up and had a good time and skated hard. Keep up the support and I’ll catch you at the next one- Sunday 2nd November. Cheers, Mark. |
