Stoked "The Comp"- Sunday 25th April 2004 @ Dimensions, Burslem, S-O-T. |
| Firstly, thanks to
all who came and supported the first skateboard competition this area has
ever had held!!!!!!
A great turn out for the day and a great response to comp entries. Well done to all who entered and had a go, regardless. It takes a lot of guts, so credit to ya! Some amazing skating went down and was a real treat for all who watched. Let me know your thoughts and feelings on the day. Do you want us to hold another?? Send me any feedback here- compfeedback@sketchyskateboarding.co.uk . The ‘14’s and under’ comp started first with about 20 entries. We split the groups into four skaters at a time and gave them 5minutes to rip up the course. The judges then chose two groups for a ‘semi-final’ and then the final was chosen. The finalists were- Callum Cord, Oliver Todd, Matt Beare, Ben Rodgers, Jed and Craig Swinburne. Some great stuff went down here. Jed was ripping for Stoke and young Ben Rodgers and Solihull’s Matt Beare were skating so well. Ben stuck a b/s kickflip 50.50 on the block driveway and was nailing nollie boardslides on the flat rails. Matt Beare’s runs were very consistent, with loads of tricks landed, nice style and looks mega confident! Even nailed a boardslide on the barrier!!. Definitely one for the future here! The results for this section were- 1st= Matt Beare (£50.00 Dazed voucher plus vids/proddy), 2nd= Ben Rodgers (vids/proddy), 3rd= Jed (vids/proddy). |

| The ‘15’s
and over’ was also well represented. Around 20+ entered here. Again,
they were split into groups of 5minute runs. The standard of skating here
was pretty impressive- the judges were having a real nightmare on whom to
choose to go through to the semi-finals. The first semi consisted of Dale
Caven, Kev Keegan, Matt Beare (who entered this section also!), Chalky and
Ian Wlliams.
The second semi was Phil Williams, Simon Davies, Adam Whitehurst, Brad Lynch and Mike Barling. The finalists were chosen after a long deliberation by the judges (or was that just a fag break!!??!) and consisted of Mike Barling, Dale Caven, Ian Williams, Kev Keegan, Phil Williams and Chalky. Each had a 2 minute, solo run to impress the judges. Some amazing skating went down throughout these sections and especially during the semis and final. Phil landed a mega fast f/s smith on the driveway ledge as well as a f/s 5.0. Chalky landed a f/s lip on the barrier, a massive 50.50 on the ledge and Ian stuck a f/s board big spin out on the big flat bar to name a few!! The placings for the final were- 6th= Dale Caven, 5th= Phil Williams, 4th= Mike Barling, 3rd= Kev Keegan (proddy, vids), 2nd= Chalky (proddy, deck, dvd) and 1st= Ian Williams (£100.00 cash, proddy). Well done to all especially Ian whose run impressed the judges enough to give him the prize! Massive thanks go out to Jay, Joe and Tony for doing the impossible job of judging the comps and sparing their time! The ‘best trick’ comp was up next. Some amazing stuff was landed during this mad half hour! Check out Ian's kickflip to no comply off the kicker onto the picnic table to flat! The winning trick went to Phil Williams with a frontside smith, flip out on the big block! A very nice Nixon watch (donated by Freeride Distribution) was the prize! We held a high ollie comp after, for laughs, and again was won by Phil, with Chalky running up a close second with massive heights acieved! I must say, I was well knackered by the end but it was well worth the effort, I thought it went really well and the response straight after was all good. Here’s to the next one!! Mark. |
